Let's talk 2019....It's been a long time since I updated this blog. Let me tell you why: /crickets

Yeah, that's right. I've got no good reason for failing to update my blog since 2016. So let's just start over.

Hi, I'm James and www.SaltForkImages.com is where I keep over 140,000 of my favorite photos. There was a time when I shot people. Not so much anymore - except for my exceptional little grandson. Recently I'm back to focusing on nature and travel. Outside of photography I spend a lot of time building little campers with my brother. We started a company a few years ago called Gateway Teardrops and we continue to build and sell campers in central Arkansas. I like designing and building campers. It's another outlet for my creative tendencies.

In the last couple years I've traveled to Europe twice, Idaho and Wyoming several times, and South Carolina a bunch. I've taken lots of photos and I've had a lot of fun doing it. I'll share a few of my favorites below. Before I do though, I'll share my best photography tip:

Get out there. It's really hard to shoot memorable photographs from your couch.

One of my biggest struggles in photography is finding inspiration when I'm not traveling. It's easy to be motivated walking around Barcelona or Rome. It's easy to get up early to chase elk during the rut in Jackson Hole or to witness first light over the Atlantic Ocean at Isle of Palms. Charleston, Jackson, Monte Carlo, Marseilles, Rome and lots of other places make it easy for a photographer. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a great photo-op. But what do you do when you're stuck at home and you feel like there's nothing out there to shoot? My solution is to load up the gear and take a drive. Go back to the spots you've shot before and look for something new. Seasons change. Weather changes. Shoot the things you shot before but force yourself to look for a new perspective. Go somewhere you would normally shoot with a wide-angle lens and limit yourself to a zoom or vice versa.

Enough with the tips. Here are some favorites from the last couple years:
Mine was pretty good....It's time for my annual blog entry! Seriously? What kind of blogger am I?

Oh well. Here's a synopsis of my 2016.....in pixels!

I waded across the Paluxy River in Dinosaur Valley State Park near Glen Rose, Texas, in March.

April 1st found us at Enchanted Rock State Park near Fredericksburg, Texas. The bluebonnets were in bloom and the hiking was fantastic.

We stayed at the weirdest B&B near Enchanted Rock. The accommodations were... strange, but there were a few interesting photo ops. I like rust; just sayin'.

In May we traveled to New Jersey to visit our daughter's future in-laws and got to do a side trip to Philadelphia. Here's Independence Hall...

I also made a new friend. Meet SJ.

In June we were back in Idaho and Wyoming. I never get tired of the Tetons.

July got us back to Idaho with a little trip to the Sawtooth Mountains near Ketchum. This is McGowan Peak and Stanley Lake.

August was hot. And I was stuck in Texas. It made me sad.

But September picked up with a trip that included Idaho, Wyoming and Utah and a first big camping trip in our Gateway Teardrop camper. Oh by the way, Gateway Teardrops is a company that I started with my brother back in 2015 and we build cool little campers. Check them out here.

There was a little camping in Grand Teton National Park...

Then we wrapped up the year with a few days in December at Folly Beach, South Carolina, as we prepared for our daughter's wedding in Charleston.

This was one of my favorite spots at the beach.

Here's another.

And of course, no wedding would be complete without a shot of the bride.

That brings us to the end of 2016. I hope your year was productive and that you got to spend time with those you love. May the Lord bless you in the coming year. Merry Christmas!
This year we left DFW on the day after Christmas and ALMOST made it to Idaho Falls before they diverted us to Salt Lake City. A day later we finally arrived in Teton Valley - and boy, was it COLD! I'm not sure if the cold caused the navigational system at IDA to malfunction or what, but we sure LOVED that bus ride from SLC to IDA.

We skied one day at Grand Targhee on the west side of the Tetons and then spent a couple days enjoying Jackson Hole. One of our favorite places to drive is around the back side of the National Elk Refuge. That's where we saw a group of bighorn sheep trying to wash a pickup truck. I'm guessing they like road salt!
We also took a sleigh ride in the Elk Refuge. It was so cool to get to see those bulls up close.

After the sleigh ride we went into Grand Teton National Park to the Snake River Overlook. I was doing my best to channel Ansel Adams when I took this one. Oh, and by the way, it was -17 degrees F when I took it!

Of course we stopped in downtown Jackson to enjoy the shopping and the scenery.

On New Year's Eve I went out at about 11pm to take some moonlight photos on the Idaho / Wyoming border. Five seconds on a tripod with the ISO set to 3200 yielded some pretty interesting photographs.
<a href="http://www.saltforkimages.com/Travel-and-Nature/Trips-to-Idaho-and-Wyoming/December-2014/i-xbvRPGX/A" title="Standing on the Idaho / Wyoming Border at 10:45pm on New Year's Eve.
And my favorite shot of the trip was on New Year's Day in the middle of Teton Valley. I'm not sure how many more years this old place will survive.

Getting back to Texas was an adventure, too. We were delayed two days and then our bags didn't make it for another day after that. But, hey, who cares? I got to go to IDAHO again. And I LOVE that!
In the classic 1972 western, The Cowboys, John Wayne looked up at the boys gathered around him and said, "Summer's over, boys...," as he took his last breath. Well, I'm not dying but the summer of 2014 is indeed over.

It's been a while - like more than a year - since I updated this blog and I'm wondering why! I read back through some of my old posts - and they're really pretty good. You should read them and I should write more.

I've traveled a bit this last year and I've taken a few photos along the way. Here's a quick review:

I went to a Clemson football game.
I went to Hawaii.
I went hog hunting.
I went snow skiing - twice.
I bought a Yeti cooler.
I was inducted into the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers and Scientists at Clemson University.
I went to Charleston, South Carolina - twice.
I went to Utah to hike with my son - again.
And, I went to Idaho and Wyoming - with a side trip to Glacier National Park in Montana.

And now for a few of my favorite photos from along the way:

Whew! That was a lot of travel and a lot of photos. In fact, I took about 11,000 photos in the last year. That's certainly not as many as I used to shoot when I was shooting lots of sports and portraits - but it was enough to get some good ones. Click on any one of the photos and it will take you to the gallery on my website where you can find more just like it. I hope you enjoy them.
Amber Waves. You know the rest...Summer is beginning to wind down and I think I've set a new record for long distance driving. Starting in late May I drove from Savannah, Georgia, to Texas; then Texas to South Carolina and back; then Texas to Colorado; then Texas to Idaho and back; then Texas to Colorado and back again; then Texas to South Carolina and back again; and then Texas to Idaho and back again. Man, my butt is sore!

I did get to take a few photographs in the midst of all this traveling. Some of the places I visited were quite spectacular. Here's a shot from Lake San Cristobal near Lake City, Colorado. I had been driving around in the rain most of the afternoon when the clouds parted in time for a beautiful sunset.

Next is a shot of Henson Creek along the Alpine Loop Scenic Drive near Lake City. This is a good example of a long exposure (0.8 seconds) making the water look very soft.

Here's a shot from Teton Valley, Idaho. The barley fields are ready for harvest and the Tetons go purple at sunset. I never get tired of that place.
My favorite wildlife shot of the year was in Yellowstone National Park along the Madison River. She was not interested in his offer.

Earlier in the summer I got this shot that combines my favorite place - Teton Valley - and one of my other favorite pastimes - biking. I was out on this evening riding the trail bike on the old Oregon Shortline Railway between Ashton and Tetonia, Idaho.

And as the sun sets on another summer, I'm looking forward to football season. This year we're going to homecoming at Clemson. It should be awesome - except for the 950 miles of interstate to get there.
I would have gotten to it earlier but the celebration after the Clemson victory over LSU just...wouldn't....stop!

We'll start with a shot of my kids before the Clemson / Georgia Tech game. Clemson won that game too!

My favorite Idaho shot from the year was taken in late January on a snowmobile trip in the Targhee National Forest. Very cold!

I took an early summer roadtrip with my son out west. We visited Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, and Rocky Mountain National Parks. He called it The Great American Roadtrip - GART. Here's a shot taken right after sunrise at Bryce. I love the way the backlighting on the hoodoos made them glow.
This one is a detail shot from Whitewater Falls, a 410-foot cascade in the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. A 1/15th second shutter speed made the water look nice and soft.
Here's a shot from Wahoo Bay in Haiti. Of course I had my camera with me as we enjoyed the sunset from a beachside restaurant.
My hometown of Aledo occasionally yields a nice shot. I like the late afternoon light and the foreground tree as a frame.
And, how about a little football? I shot this at the Louisiana Tech vs. UT-San Antonio game. I think it should have been interference.
I'm hoping 2013 will be a good photography year. I've scheduled a trip to Washington, D.C., in March and I'm sure I'll be back in Idaho this summer. I'm also hoping to make a trip to Zion with my son - sort of a GART II. And of course, I'm sure there will be a trip or two back to Clemson.
Almost 15 hours on the road to cover about 800 miles. Our total trip was 3,775 miles over eleven days.

I'm not sure how much we spent on Snapple Peach Tea or powdered sugar donuts but I do know that the time with my 17-year old son was PRICELESS!
Everyone knows that the best photos are taken during the golden time just before and after sunrise. The problem is that this time of year the sun comes up at 5:35am in this part of Colorado! If it were just me - no problem. I would get up at 4am and be in a prime location for the perfect shot at the golden moment. But my traveling partner can best be described as a 140 pound lump of apathy. Enough said.

We hit the road about 7:45 this morning and wound our way up the west side of RMNP along Trail Ridge Road. It was a "severe clear" morning with temps in the low 40's as we crossed the continental divide. We managed to make it to the Moraine Visitors Center at 9:10am. That was 10 minutes after the road to Bear Lake closed to private vehicles. We were forced to ride the shuttle! Uggggghhhhh.

The road to Bear Lake is under construction and between that and the mandatory shuttle system, we took about an hour to make the 15 minute trip. From the Bear Lake Trailhead we hiked about two miles to Bierstadt Lake. Here's a shot of Bear Lake.

Bierstadt Lake is named for the famous German-American painter, Albert Bierstadt, who visited the area in 1876. Here's a shot of Bierstadt Lake from the loop trail.

We made the steep descent down to the Bierstadt Trailhead for a total of about four miles in time to wait for the shuttle to take us back to our vehicle. About an hour later we completed the fifteen minute trip. It was a good hike and even though the shuttle was a pain, I would recommend the experience to anyone....especially if you have your own 140 pound lump of apathy.
Through the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 and past Winter Park, we stopped in Granby and snagged a room for the night before heading into Rocky Mountain National Park. We passed a couple of moose and some elk on the way to the top of the mountain where we could see a long, long way. Here's a photo looking northeast beyond the park. That plume of smoke is a wildfire somewhere west of Fort Collins.

We drove across the park to the town of Estes Park where we ate a little supper. Many of you don't realize what a family-friendly town Estes Park is. Everyone there enjoys mini-golf. Check out this guy.

On the way out of town we spotted some young owls on a nest above the highway. They're very easy to spot; all you have to do is look for the photographers that are looking up. :-)
Midday. The hottest part of the day. Not the best time to hike in THE DESERT! Fortunately it was only a short hike from the Devil's Garden trailhead to Landscape Arch. Landscape is the longest arch in the park at over 300 feet. At its narrowest point it is only six feet thick. In 1991 a major chunk of the arch collapsed leaving what we see today. We felt like we should walk out and see it because the rest of it could fall anytime now or within the next thousand years.

Here's a shot of Landscape Arch.

Some nice people from Australia took a shot for us after I took a shot of them with their camera.

After Landscape Arch we headed back to Moab with a quick stopover at Park Avenue.

We had a nice lunch in Moab and then wandered around in the various t-shirt shops so that Aaron could find the perfect expression of his warped sense of humor. I spent the rest of the afternoon after that working on photographs because that's what photographers do.

About 7pm we headed back into Arches for the sunset at Double Arch. There were a lot of people up in the arch but they all cleared out at the perfect time..... well, except for Aaron.

The sunset at Double Arch turned out quite nice.

Tomorrow we head to Colorado. From Moab we go north to I-70 and then we point the Xterra toward the sunrise. Our plan is to pass through Rocky Mountain National Park from west to east and wrap the day up somewhere down near I-25. We'll keep you posted.
About 6pm we headed back into Arches to do the Delicate Arch hike. Our goal was to get there during the sweet light before sunset. Apparently about 75 other people had the same goal.

I did manage to get a few cool shots of the iconic symbol of Utah.

And on the hike back I got to see some Ute Indian Petroglyphs. These pictures are dated somewhere between 1650 and 1850.

It's my understanding that anything after 1850 is just plain old graffiti.
Canyonlands is about 40 miles from Moab and is not as busy as Arches National Park. It is, however, just as spectacular - in its own way. We visited the Islands in the Sky district which is characterized by expansive views of the amazing canyons which form the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers.

This is the view from the Green River Overlook.

We also took a short hike to Mesa Arch.

And then we did something that has made Canyonlands famous: We did a little 4x4-ing. We took the Shafer Trail down the side of the mountain to Potash Road which we followed all the way back to Moab. It was one of the coolest things we've done. We drove along ledges with thousand-foot drop-offs right outside our doors. First gear and 4-Low kept us from running off the ends of the switchbacks but nothing helped with the bone-jarring road surface. Here are a few shots that might be of interest to Nissan.
Our nine-hour drive started with a cut through Zion National Park before we spent a lot of time in the middle of nowhere. Somewhere out there we passed through Monument Valley with a quick stopover at Goosenecks State Park along the San Juan River.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing a group of Bighorn Sheep on a cliff above us in Zion. Here's a shot of them as they considered their options.

Here's one of the sheep descending the rock face. It was amazing how surefooted these guys were.

Monument Valley was interesting. Aaron thought it was cool to stand where Forrest Gump stopped running.

And then on to Moab where we set up our base-camp (motel) for the next three days, grabbed a sandwich for supper, and then headed to Arches National Park for sunset. Here's a couple of shots from Arches.

He's feeling much better now and will be able to travel tomorrow as we head to Moab to continue the Great American Road Trip.

But today wasn't a complete loss. I went out on the back porch at my friend Chuck's house and found some interesting photo subjects. Bees and flowers are pretty challenging. I took over a hundred shots and ended up with about a half-dozen that were pretty good. You be the judge....

We had big plans to go hiking at Angel's Landing in Zion National Park this morning but Aaron got sick. We're not sure what the culprit was but something he ate has taken him out. Clear fluids and dry toast are the order for his day.

:-(
We got up about 7:30am and headed to the famous Bear Paw Cafe, in St. George for breakfast. The importance of this good breakfast became obvious later in the day....

From St. George we went north to Snow Canyon State Park and then turned west so that Aaron could say he had been in Nevada. From Nevada we drove back to St. George through the Virgin River Gorge section of Interstate 15 that cuts off the northwest corner of Arizona.

We continued past St. George on I-15 to the Kolob Canyon section of Zion National Park. Kolob Canyon is not accessible from the main part of Zion and, as a result, is much less crowded. Here's a shot from the 5-mile scenic drive up Kolob Canyon.

And, another shot showing my new wheels.

At about 2pm we decided to skip lunch and take a hike. (Now you know why breakfast was so important.) We took the Taylor Creek Trail which was about 5 miles round trip. Along the way we passed the Larsen cabin.

At the end of the trail we were treated to a great view of a double arch alcove cut into the rock by thousands of years of erosion.

And of course, a shot of Aaron.
I got up about 5:25am to photograph the sunrise in Bryce Canyon National Park this morning while my young traveling partner SLEPT IN! It was okay. All those naps in the truck yesterday must have worn him out. Here's what he missed.

Don't forget that you can click on any photo to see it larger and then click on it again to see the whole gallery of photos.

And of course, I try to always stop and enjoy the flowers.

When I finally got Aaron out of bed - and got a few photographs downloaded and processed - we hit the road for Zion National Park and St. George, Utah.

We pretty much just did a drive through at Zion, knowing that we would be back over the next few days to explore the details. But of course, you need a photo so here is one of Aaron...awake.

After our quick look at Zion, we headed to St. George to meet up with my friend, Chuck. Chuck lives north of Salt Lake City but has a place in St. George which he has graciously offered us as our base camp for the next few days. More to come....
Bryce Canyon is located on a plateau - one of several in SE Utah - that was lifted up many thousands of years ago and is now eroding away. The plateau was previously the bottom of an inland lake that filled with silt and sediment which eventually compacted into rock. The layers of rock erode at different rates leaving fantastic patterns and formations. Hoodoos are the most common site in the park. These are the strange, multi-colored spires that stand guard over the trails below the rim of the canyon.

Here's a shot I took at Bryce Point:

Aaron and I took a hike from Sunrise Point along the Queen's Garden Trail and then back out of the canyon along the Navajo Loop trail to Sunset Point.

Here are a couple of shots of Aaron on the trail.

We crossed over from Texas to New Mexico on Saturday and I turned my watch back an hour for Mountain Time. No big deal. Then we crossed into Arizona. Again, no concerns.

Sunday morning we were up early in Flagstaff hoping to get to Grand Canyon before morning was gone. I checked the time and it was 6am so I thought we would grab a bite to eat from the breakfast bar at the Ramada before heading out. We got to the lobby and it was deserted. I asked the guy where that fancy breakfast was that they told us about the night before. He responded, "You're early. It's only 5 o'clock." It turns out that Arizona doesn't observe Daylight Savings Time. What is up with that?

The time on the clock didn't really matter to us. The sun was up and it was time to roll.
We arrived at the East Entrance to Grand Canyon National Park about 6:45am and stopped first at the Desert Overlook. Here's a shot.

And here's a shot of Aaron taking a photo of the Asian tourists. I'm not sure why.

I couldn't talk him into hiking to the bottom and back so after a quick walk to Mather Point we proceeded north to Utah and the reliability of Daylight Savings Time.
We left Aledo at 5am and arrived in Flagstaff before the sun went down. We certainly didn't lollygag (Arkansan for "waste time") on the way. In fact, I only took one photograph. Here's a shot of Aaron.... standin' ... on... a... corner....

Tomorrow we hit the Grand Canyon and then head into Utah to Bryce Canyon. Stay tuned....James Albrittonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00486545436288097409noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8442093453517745978.post-79461123932227500952012-06-01T17:22:00.000-05:002012-06-02T22:58:45.211-05:00Where, Oh Where?Where, Oh where, has Salt Fork Images been? Tune in over the next couple weeks and see the tales of an epic adventure.

Aaron, my 17-year-old, and I are leaving tomorrow morning heading west. By the time we get back home we will have travelled well over 3,000 miles and visited six national parks, a couple of state parks, and at least one Navajo National Park.

Our first stop will be Flagstaff, Arizona. We expect to make it there after one brutal 15 hour day of driving. From there we'll step back the distance a little and hit Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Parks. We'll follow that up with three days in St. George, Utah, which will be our base camp for a visit to Zion National Park. From Zion we will head back east to Monument Valley, Utah, and then up to Moab, Utah. Moab will be home while we explore Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. If we survive all that, we'll leave the Red Rock Country and head into the mountains of Colorado for about three days in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The plan is to hike, photograph, and then hike some more. I'll try to chronicle our progress with a few photographs and descriptions on this blog but the majority of my photos will be posted at SaltForkImages.com. Be sure to check it out!

Okay, that's actually two things but in Texas they often go together.

Yesterday was a tough day in the DFW Metroplex with twelve (or more) tornados touching down from Joshua to Greenville. I happened to be in Joshua for a mid-morning meeting and I saw the first tornado of the day form just east of highway 174. Shown below is a photo I snapped from my truck window. This is one reason I always keep my camera with me. Sunsets, sunrises, car wrecks, tornados, muledeer or wildflowers: you never know when you might encounter the shot of a lifetime. Or, maybe you need to prove to everyone that you just saw your first tornado.

By the way, once you know you're safe from the storm, it's okay to get a little creative.

Of course, the softer side of Texas springtime occasionally gets my attention. Here's a shot of Liv in the bluebonnets across the street from my house. What a cutie!

Don't forget to celebrate Easter next Sunday. Christ paid the debt for your sins and for mine by giving His life on a cross. On the third day He overcame the grave. He is risen!

-JamesJames Albrittonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00486545436288097409noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8442093453517745978.post-23518782277504425422011-12-19T20:05:00.004-06:002011-12-19T20:41:10.040-06:00Congratulations Bearcats! The Aledo High School Bearcats won the Texas 4A Division 2 State Championship in football last weekend.... for the THIRD time in a row!
